Summoning stamina and strength, Sarah Gilbert sets out – again – to read Australia’s only Nobel Prize-winning author.
Words Sarah Gilbert
SUMMER reading lists: never been a fan. I have no high-minded objection to people taking themselves off to the beach or the camping ground with a pile of detective novels and some chick lit, but I think they’ve got it around the wrong way. Those long, lazy summer days uninterrupted by the focus-destroying ping of electronic devices should be reserved for tackling the great beasts of the canon, the big thick ones full of boring bits that your overtaxed brain could never get through amid the emails and the school drop-offs that enslave us through every other season.
I decided back in October that this would be My Summer of Patrick White. I read Voss when I was in my early 20s and loved it. My attention span in those pre-kid years was unstoppable.
