WHEN Ken Wallis told his brother, Steve, that he had his eye on a 40-acre property in central Victoria, he advised him to buy more land. “The going wisdom was you need at least 100 acres so you can run livestock,” Wallis says. “But all I kept thinking was, 100 acres is a bloody lot of blackberries to deal with.”
Against advice, Wallis and his partner, TR Keller, bought the property on the banks of the Goulburn River near the central Victorian town of Tallarook and moved in. “We made a conscious decision not to have livestock,” Wallis says. “But for a lot of locals, that was radical. It seemed like everybody was determined that we have something.”
