Entries to the 2025 Galah Regional Photography Prize close in six days.
If you haven't yet entered, this is your sign to get cracking. And if you know a photographer in regional Australia (please see below for more on that), please share this email with them. Time is running out to enter regional Australia's richest photography prize and show us how you see our country and its people through your regional lens.
"Composition is always a big thing for me. The most ordinary sight can be made moving if captured at a certain angle, or in a particular light, or framed in an unusual way. The best images spark a visceral reaction in the viewer - happiness, sorry, pain, joy, laughter. I'm always looking for a feeling." Katrina Strickland, Editor of Good Weekend.
"I'll know it when I see it. Photography that resonates is often hard to describe but somehow easy to recognise." Portrait photographer Hugh Stewart.
"I will be looking for our beautiful country and/or its people captured in a way I haven't seen before." Fiona Bateman is the Art Editor at Galah magazine.
"I am looking for images that capture my attention and imagination, that draw me into them." Rachael Parsons, Director of the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM).
"I'm curious to see photographs that surprise me and reframe our common understanding of what it means to be Australian." Adam Ferguson, 2023 Galah Regional Photography Prize Winner.
And a bonus tip from us at Galah HQ; just enter, even if you don't view yourself as a professional photographer. The experience/ exposure you'll receive if selected as a finalist, helps build confidence, a network, and a career.
Entries are open to Australian photographers living outside of the major capital cities. We've tightened up the definition of regional from the last prize. This year, we're using the Regional Australia Institute's definition of regional, which refers to everything beyond the major capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
To see if your postcode is eligible, head here and use the search icon on the top right to see if your postcode is on the list. If you can't find your postcode but you are sure you live regionally, please send us an email info@galahpress.com
Finalists will be announced on 28 February 2025 and the prize announcement and party will be on 3 May in Armidale at the New England Museum of Art (NERAM).
