Ralph Bristow brings an artist’s eye and a landscape designer’s attention to detail to his exuberant garden.

FOR all our talk of encouraging seasonality in gardens, few have managed it quite like Ralph Bristow. Even when most of his flowers have died, dried and turned various shades of brown, his garden holds its own.
Look at photographs of Bristow’s garden in summer and you wouldn’t recognise it in winter. I visited in July and it was leached of colour, ragged and skeletal. It was beautiful.
